Serve Our Church
Becoming the Body
We believe that serving on a team is one of the most meaningful ways to discover the presence of the Holy Spirit working in your daily life and in ours. There are a great many ways you can serve within St. Francis, from assisting during our service as lay reader or usher to helping with our nursery to occasional maintenance and groundskeeping projects and much more.
Itâs a great way to share growth in Christ with your neighbors while helping us accomplish our mission to be and become Christ’s Body in the world. We are always grateful for your service. You can learn more about the various ways to serve at St. Francis below:
Vestry
The Vestry is the governing board of the Church, and meets together monthly to make spiritual, logistical, and business decisions on behalf of the entire church. We elect new Vestry members every January at the Annual Parish meeting, so let us know if you are interested in serving!
Altar Guild
The Altar Guild helps to set up for every service of worship at St. Francis of the Islands, ensuring that altar hangings and elements for Holy Communion are properly prepared.
For more information, please contact Karen Murrin.
Choir
The choir of St. Francis of the Islands enhances our worship by helping lead us in the singing of congregational hymns and by singing offertory anthems at our second service.
For more information, please contact Anne Acker or Charlean Smith.
Lay Eucharistic Ministers
Lay Eucharistic Ministers assist with the administration of Holy Communion and help to lead the liturgy (including praying the Prayers of the People). Lay Eucharistic Ministers must be licensed, which requires a brief training.
For more information, please contact Fr. Ian Lasch.
Lectors
Lectors read the Old and New Testament Lessons in worship, and lead us in the Psalm. Anyone can be a lector, though a process of licensing is required.
For more information, please contact Fr. Ian Lasch.
Ushers and Greeters
Ushers and Greeters are the first welcoming faces that worshipers and visitors see, and assist with greeting parishioners and newcomers, passing out bulletins, and collecting contact information from those who would like to be properly welcomed by the church.
For more information, please contact Fr. Ian Lasch.
Outreach Committee
The Outreach Committee of St. Francis of the Islands exists to encourage members of our parish to fulfill the mandate of Jesus within our Savannah community: to care for the orphan and widow, to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, and to shelter the homeless.
Ongoing ministries of the Outreach Committee include: assembling blessing bags full of necessities to be given to people in need, making peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for distribution at Savannah area homeless camps, Red Cross blood drives, food and clothing collection and distribution, and monetary donations to other local aid organizations.
For more information, please contact Linda Gernay.
Flower Guild
The Flower Guild prepares offerings of beautifully arranged flowers for worship each Sunday, and for additional services of the church as needed.
For more information, please contact Serena Nasworthy.
Endowment Fund Committee
The Endowment Fund Committee manages the St. Francis of the Islands Endowment Fund by making decisions regarding its investments and expenditures. It seeks to maintain the endowment fund for the long-term financial health of St. Francis.
For more information, please contact Neil Johnson.
Memorial Garden Committee
The Memorial Garden Committee works to upkeep and maintain the St. Francis of the Islands Memorial Garden and Pet Memorial Garden. The main portion of the Memorial Garden is for the inurnment of parishioners’ cremains, and there is an area for the scattering of pet cremains (with room for the placement of memorial bricks).
